Maisie Jane’s, which started as a Future Farmers of America project in high school, greets you with warm country hospitality in our prized historical quaint historical country store and shares our family roots of four generations of almond farming in Chico! We feature our very own dry-roasted, flavored, and chocolate dipped almonds, homemade pies, almond butter as well as other nut butters, Honey, Caramel Corn & Almonds, beautifully wrapped gift baskets and much more. We celebrate the local bounty by offering you a vast selection of locally made products; which you can sample at our tasting bar. Historic farming equipment and photos are on display for your enjoyment too.
Where do I start?! Every day and season is so very different. Having three young girls, keep the early morning routine the same of taking care of them-and the husband, flock of chickens, steers, pigs, horses, ducks, goat, cat, & dog. Yes, a lot of mouths to feed! Then it's off to managing our 40 employees. My husband has his production crew and orchard crew that he manages, making sure the almond trees are well tended for, and that our gals in the kitchen keep the over 300 items of almond and other nut based products produced in a timely fashion to meet the shipping deadlines to our customers. He's also in charge of the plant expansion and equipment research and maintenance. Myself, I am managing all sales aspects, from our local retail Maisie Jane's gift shop, to handling all the marketing, advertising, promotions, new product development, and doing all the pricing. My husband and I both review all the financials making sure we're on target to our budget and projections.
The excitement that we are reaching more and more consumers out there, sharing the incredible bounty of our local agriculture while educating them every opportunity along the way! And, selling clean healthy foods, all of which are either Organic or all natural and as simply processed as possible.
We offer a fun and very educational pumpkin patch every fall. We have created short films highlighting a lot of our farming practices, such as our Bee friendly farming practices, our deep family farming history, and our organic farming practices. In our retail store we offer tours, showing off the antique almond farming artifacts and explaining the farming photographs we have on display. We also have given tours of our processing plant to certain groups. In addition, we've hosted farm and plant tours to many of our key customers. Connecting people to farming is critical in keeping the agriculture industry vibrant and strong for the future.
It really is connecting people to agriculture and sharing the sacred farming lifestyle that I've been blessed with.
Oh, all the time. Whether it's simply sharing with customers on the trail how almonds are grown, harvested, and then processed in the yummy treats they buy. One of my favorites is seeing how shocked people are that almonds are ONLY grown in California….'yes' they really are that special!
Since the very 1st one! It's so wonderful to see how far it's come and I'm so proud of Nicole Johansson for all her hard work to make it grow and succeed!
It's like being a co-host for the grandest party celebrating our local agriculture. It's so great!
Ag in general has grown by leaps and bounds. I can remember being a young teenager when country music wasn't cool. Our high school FFA department was very much struggling because a lack of outside money/support and the lack of interest from the youth. Now it's ‘cool' to become an AG student, drive your big truck and listen to country tunes. Times were very difficult for farmers and agriculture in the early to mid ‘80's. They continue to be challenging for the small farmers, but I think that the ag community has gotten smarter and more creative on ‘how to make it' and survive. It's very encouraging for our next generation.
Yes, a few. My husband for joining Maisie Jane's in 2003, sacrificing his career for this lifestyle that's more desirable for us as a family. My father, who is the smartest, most passionate farmer I've ever known that never gives up! Any my mother, who has been with me since day one when I started Maisie Jane's-she's always played an important part in the Maisie Jane's gift shop' s success.
